Write your self-review

Pause, reflect, recognize your achievements. This journaling activity is your guided personal check-in, especially during times of big change or overwhelm.

It can help you develop three essential skills: self-awareness, personal honesty, and recognizing your unique strengths. I encourage new coaching clients to do this activity before we begin working together. However, this activity is private and just for you so let your thoughts flow as freely as you can.

Before you begin

  • Find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted

  • Turn off all notifications, and background sounds including music

  • Grab your preferred writing tool (notebook, journal, etc.)

  • Set a timer for 45 minutes

Take your time with each section. If you finish early, pause, take a few deep breaths, and keep writing. See what else comes out.

Writing Prompts

  1. Brain Dump: Release the whirlwind of thoughts cluttering your mind. Write down everything: half-formed ideas, pending tasks, future plans, and nagging concerns. Your mind is naturally in a state of restlessness – use this moment to transfer that hard your mind does onto paper.

  2. Internal Compass Check-In: Pause and notice: How do you feel right this instant? Not yesterday, not an hour ago – now. Scan your body for physical sensations. What emotions surface when you slow down? Document these observations and notice if the simple act of writing them down shifts your experience.

  3. Praise Performance Review: Write yourself a glowing performance review covering your last two years. Where have you truly shined? What work energizes you? Think about those signature strengths that colleagues, clients, and leaders consistently praise. Recall your standout projects and challenging situations you navigated with skill. Be honest but generous – describe yourself through the eyes of your biggest supporters.
